This December, I recently graduated from Boston University. During my time here, I was an active member, and one-term president of BU’s sketch comedy team, Slippery When Wet (Formerly Slow Children at Play).
During my 3 years on the team, I wrote probably 100 sketches (or less idk), some of which were good enough to be performed. In honor of the team’s 30 Year Anniversary, Here is a list of the ones that are my ten favorite sketches in no particular order.
Before we begin, I would like to note that this is an incredibly a biased list comprised mostly of sketches I was a part of, and exclusively of sketches from when I was on the team. Additionally, I will mostly just include sketches that have been recorded and posted on YouTube. I acknowledge that by making this list, I am quantifying the art I made with my friends, which some would say is a dickish thing to do, but I think it’s important to highlight my favorites for my own record. Any one of these could change depending on the day, but I feel confident that these 10 are my favorite.
If you have a problem with any of these choices, make your own dang list.
1. Georgia the Country
Guy at Model UN who’s a little weird.
This is the one sketch that I wish I could have been a part of. Perhaps the perfect character sketch? Led by writers Cadee Stefani and John Muenning, Georgia the Country captured the hearts and minds of the Law Auditorium. This was one of the few sketches that would make me laugh every time it was rehearsed, and the sketch I think about most. Top 5 Bubble performance.
Favorite Line: “New alert. It appears the meteor has splintered into five smaller, but equally deadly meteors”
2. Horsetha
Girl’s who half-horse.
Horsetha has a special place in my heart, for it was the first sketch I wrote with fellow new-kids at the time, John Muenning and Charlotte Smith. I had in my notes app, “Horse girl, girl who’s half horse” and the rest was history. There’s so much I love about this, the big-ass spotlight, the face-to-ass horse cosplay, Jazz’s dance, the RipChide cover. My favorite Jazz sketch. This one is just an all-time classic. Horsetha is us, we are Horsetha.
Favorite Line: “What the fuck? I like pizza!”
3. Dune
A parody of Y/A movies that ends up being better than most Y/A movies.
This sketch is just awesome. Like, it’s just so awesome. The sequel is worth checking out, but no other sketch captures the joy of being on this team when everything fires on all cylinders. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. Top 5 Ajax performance. Written by Cadee Stefani, Hugh Kirsch, and Spencer Klein.
Favorite Line: “This is our most beautiful crystal cave. I come here to think…and get away from it all”
4. Improvisational Comedy
Guy at the improv show who is a little weird.
This is in my favorites for a couple of reasons.
1. Making fun of improv. 2. Evil Banjo 3. Among Us joke.
Written by me, Spencer Klein, and Catie Reihe
Favorite Line: “I don’t want to kill anyone. I just want to save myself.”
5. The Car Seat
Kids at a sleepover get existential.
This sketch sticks out from others in the list mainly because it’s really, not that funny, and I think that’s why I like it. I wrote this sketch with Maxwell Anthony, and we wanted to do just like a sad sketch about kids talking about death. This makes the list because I think the moment a child learns about death is really funny, and also because “Call of Duty: Hotel Rwanda” makes me laugh.
Favorite Line: “ I fell asleep in the car, and I woke up in my bed. And it makes me wonder, what if I never woke up back in bed…stuck, no, trapped in the liminal space between consciousness and the car seat.”
6. Piss General
No peeing in the military.
This may have been the first or second sketch I heard pitched while on the team and I think I fell out of my seat laughing. This sketch goes in the Criterion collection just for the phrase “coming thin.” This is the blueprint of. No notes. Written by Hugh Kirsch, Spencer Klein, Samir Singh, and Charlotte Smith? I don’t remember.
Favorite Line: “Oh this? Hogwash. I’m just coming thin.”
7. Multiple Endings Murder Mystery
Murder mystery with multiple endings.
This is the sketch that I had the most fun performing. I really liked the idea of doing a sketch with multiple endings where the audience chooses, but I just sorta tell them who to choose and all the endings are quite similar. Vanity pick, but ain’t they all?
Favorite Line: “*in the tune of Post Malone’s Congratulations* Now they gonna take me to the station”
Written by me, John Muenning, Ellison Mohan, and Catie Reihe, I think
8. Mysterious Guy
Guy at a party who’s mysterious.
A lot of SWW sketches feature a guy at a party who’s a little weird. But no other sketch has actively affected the way I behave at parties/life like Mysterious Guy. Ive said these lines at places, to little social benefit. Written by Me, John Muenning, and Cadee Stefani. Also check out the sequel.
Favorite Line(s): “Where are you from?” “Not sure.”
9. Guess the Girl
There is a girl among us.
Joke for joke, this one might be the best-written sketch during my time on the team. A parody of those Jubilee videos, Guess the Girl captures how ridiculous those types of videos are. Top 3 Dice sketch. Written by me, Cadee Stefani, and John Muenning.
Favorite Line: “I don’t really watch a lot of sports, because I’m too busy waxing my balls.’
Honorable Mentions.
Now before we get to the last, and probably my favorite Slips sketch of all time, here are some honorable mentions. These are all sketches that I really love.
Rush Hour
Weekend at Baby’s
Great British Bake Off
Boyfriend in the Army
The Purge
And so many more!
10. Table
The invention of the table.
This is my all-time favorite sketch from my three years on the team. It’s timeless, and I’ll say it, irreverent. I wrote this with John Muenning and Leah Parrott. My favorite part of this sketch is that when we rehearsed it, Bubble performed it fairly contained, but in this video, well. See for yourself.
Favorite Line: All of them.
In conclusion, I miss performing sketches with my friends. The magic of writing something on a looseleaf paper and seeing it come to life on stage is a high I’ll chase for the rest of my life.
This was a very hard list to make.
If you were a writer on one of these sketches and want credit, text me.
Happy 30 Years to Slippery When Wet or Slow Children at Play or Slow Kids or whatever, and happy graduation to me.
Thanks.
Watching all of these rn. Your bleach blonde moment🔥
God ur so right I got chills
